[ about ]
SUBSTRAT supports artists with the day-to-day logistics of their practice, from studio work to on-site project coordination. Collaborating closely with professionals across the art world, we are dedicated to creating opportunities for artists by developing tailored strategies, whether project-based or through long-term contracts. Services include content writing, exhibition management, production assistance, press outreach, support with project proposals and applications, budgeting, preparatory accounting, inventory management, research, and project documentation.
SUBSTRAT strives to further artists’ careers and expand their visibility — an ever more challenging task in an increasingly saturated art market. Developments such as digitalisation, commodification, and institutional norms often compromise the integrity of artistic work. By taking charge of administrative, communicative, and business-oriented responsibilities increasingly imposed by market forces, we create the space for artists to fully focus on their practice.

[ roots ]
Founded in 2023 by Alexia Timmermans, SUBSTRAT grew out of her experience working in various fields of the art market. With her more recent engagement as an independent curator, she aims to promote the vision of emerging artists through exhibitions that are uncompromised, encouraging dialogue and radical imagination.
Previously, Alexia held various positions, including at Studio Julius von Bismarck (Text and Communication), neugerriemschneider (Head of Content and Communications), KEWENIG (Gallery Assistance and Press), BOROS Collection (Assistant to the Director and Art Mediator).
She completed academic degrees at Sotheby’s Institute of Art London (Master in Art Business), at Humboldt University and Free University of Berlin (Master of European Studies), and at University of Antwerp/ Complutense University of Madrid (Bachelor German- and Master Spanish Literature and Linguistics).
